John Palmer – North of the Border, Vienna Lager
The award-winning recipe from Brewing Classic Styles by Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer, prepared and assembled in a ready to brew ingredient kit!
People are always asking me what my favorite beer is, and Vienna lager is always on the list. Vienna as a style was almost extinct in Germany, surviving only in Mexico, when it experienced a resurgence thanks to Michael Jackson and American craft brewers. Vienna is the younger brother of the Oktoberfest/Marzen style, and has less of the dark bread crust flavor of Munich malt and less caramel sweetness. In Mexico, Vienna has a touch of roast character to further dry out the finish, and this recipe emulates that variation of the style. North of the Border Vienna is a soft, rich red lager with a smooth dry finish, and sure to become one of your favorites, as it is mine.
